Gusman's late goal gives Whitworth a tie at UPS

TACOMA, Wash. – Dominic Gusman's goal in the 88th minute lifted visiting Whitworth into a 1-1 tie with the University of Puget Sound in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Sunday afternoon.

The Pirates (2-3-1 overall, 0-1-1 NWC) avoided a second loss on the weekend with Gusman's first goal of the season.  The Loggers are now 2-1-1 (0-1-1).

The match was tightly contested throughout.  Puget Sound had a slight edge in total shots (13-12), but Whitworth had the advantage in shots on-target (8-5).

Stuart Methner gave the Loggers a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute with his first goal of the season, from an assist by Etienne Polak.

Whitworth was stymied by Puget Sound keeper Ryan Saunders, who had stopped seven shots until Gusman broke through with his game-tying goal.  Jordan Voigt had the assist.

Aiden Chase, who played the second half in goal for the Bucs, made a save in the final seconds to preserve the tie.  Chase made three saves in the second half. Anton Dershem, who started in goal for Whitworth, made one save in the opening half.

The Pirates return home to host Whitman on Wednesday afternoon as part of a men's and women's Northwest Conference doubleheader.
