Mayer scores 24 to lift Whitworth past L&C 78-54

PORTLAND, Ore.— Olivia Mayer led all-scores with 24 points to help the visiting Whitworth Pirates beat the Lewis & Clark Pioneers 78-54 in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game on Saturday night at Pamplin Sports Center. 

Whitworth improved to 8-13 overall, 5-7 NWC and Lewis & Clark fell to 2-19, 1-11. 

Whitworth and Lewis & Clark were efficient to start the quarter, each scoring on their opening possessions. The Pirates went on a 7-0 run, capped by Quincy McDeid's jumper to take a 11-6 lead with 3:20 remaining. Madelyn Sanchez's jumper pulled the Pioneers to within two points, but Kimberly Dewey answered with a three-pointer to give the Pirates a 17-12 edge at the end of the period. 

Lewis & Clark was not able to keep up with Whitworth in the second quarter. The Pirates took a 26-14 lead with 5:57 remaining after a 7-0 run, capped by Dewey's layup. Olivia Mayer's jumper with 2:08 remaining, gave Whitworth their largest lead of the half, up 32-18. The Pioneers were able to trim the margin at the end of the period, but the Pirates led 34-23 at the half. 

Charlotte Caroll's layup to start the third quarter brought the Pioneers to within 34-25, but Mayer quickly scored to give the Pirates a double-digit advantage. Lewis & Clark shot 57.1% from the floor in the third period, but the Pirates nearly matched shooting 56.3%. Whitworth led 59-40 at the end of the period. 

Lewis & Clark continued to battle in the final frame, but were unable to cut into the Pirate lead. Whitworth controlled the quarter, beating the Pioneers 78-54. 

Whitworth's Olivia Mayer led all-scorers with 24 points, 14 rebounds, and six assists. This was Mayer's 15th double-double performance of the season. Kimberly Dewey added 19 points and five rebounds. The Pirates shot 48.4% (30-62) from the floor, 29.6% (8-27) from behind the arc, and 83.3% (10-12) from the charity stripe. The Pirates outrebounded the Pioneers 42-21. 

Lewis & Clark's Charlotte Carroll led with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Mukai added 12 points and two rebounds. The Pioneers shot 37.3% (22-59) from the floor, 28.6% (4-14) from three-point range, and 75.0% (6-8) from the free-throw line. 

Whitworth will return home and play Whitman on Tuesday at 6:00 PM.
