Whitman women take Battle of Whits 67-48

SPOKANE, Wash.— The Whitworth Pirates fell 67-48 to the Whitman Blues in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game on Tuesday night at the Whitworth Fieldhouse. 

Whitworth fell to 8-14 overall, 5-8 NWC and Whitman improved to 16-5, 11-2. The Pirates committed 19 turnovers, resulting in 19 points for the Blues. 

Whitworth kept things close with Whitman the entire first period. Korin Baker scored first for the Blues, but Oliva Mayer quickly answered on the other end for the Pirates. Elena McHargue's driving layup gave Whitman a 16-10 edge with 2:47 remaining. Quincy McDeid's three-pointer with 59 seconds remaining kept the Pirates close. The Blues held onto a 17-15 lead at the end of the period.

In the second quarter, Whitworth was able to keep pace with Whitman until the Blues broke out midway through the period. Natalie Lundberg's layup with 2:45 remaining capped a 7-0 run for the Blues and gave them their largest lead at that time, 30-20. Devin Cope scored for the Pirates, but Whitman led 30-22 at halftime. 

Whitman came out of the half with energy, scoring the first four points of the quarter and forcing Pirate turnovers. Lindsay Drango's layup gave the Blues a 40-27 lead with 4:45 remaining. Whitworth's Mya Edwards quickly answered with a trey on the other end. Each time Whitman looked to extend their lead, the Pirates were able to answer. McHargue made a jumper in the final seconds to give the Blues a 51-39 advantage at the end of the period.

Whitman controlled the fourth quarter, outscoring Whitworth 16-9. The Blues beat the Pirates 67-48. 

Olivia Mayer led the Pirates with 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Quincy McDeid and Kimberly Dewey scored 10 points apiece. Whitworth shot 42.6% (20-47) from the floor and 28.6% (4-14) from behind the arc. The Pirates edged the Blues 32-29 in rebounds. 

Carly Martin led Whitman with 17 points and two rebounds. Lindsay Drango added 15 points and Elena McHargue had 14 points. Whitman shot 46.8% (29-62) from the floor and 28.6% (4-14) from three-point range. 

Whitworth will play on Friday at George Fox at 6:00 PM.
