Whitworth falls 72-49 at Pacific

FOREST GROVE, Ore.— The visiting Whitworth Pirates fell 72-49 to the Pacific Boxers in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game on Friday night. 

The Pirates fell to 7-13 overall, 4-7 NWC and the Boxers improved to 14-5, 7-3. 

Whitworth kept things close with Pacific for much of the opening frame, until the Boxers built a lead in the final minutes. Rilee Price's layup with 4:23 remaining put Pacific up 12-6. Olivia Mayer answered on the other end, but the Boxers ended the period with a 16-9 lead. 

Whitworth's Kimberly Dewey opened the second quarter with a three-pointer to trim the margin, but Pacific took control of the remainder of the period. The Boxers went on to outscore the Pirates 23-8 to take a 39-20 advantage at the half. Pacific's defense limited the Pirates to just two made field goals in the second quarter.

The Boxers continued their dominance out of the half, extending their lead to 56-26 after Rilee Price's three-pointer with 3:35 remaining. Whitworth responded with a 7-0 run, capped by Olivia Mayer's trey. A layup by Cheyenne Rodgers in the final seconds brought the Pirates to within 58-37 at the end of the quarter. 

The Pirates continued to battle in the final frame, but were not able to cut into the Boxer lead. Pacific controlled the quarter, beating Whitworth  72-49. 

Olivia Mayer led Whitworth with 10 points and 10 rebounds, for her 14th double-double performance of the season. Quincy McDeid added 10 points and five rebounds. The Pirates shot 27.3% (18-66) from the floor and 27.8% (5-18) from behind the arc. 

Pacific's Shaad Williams led all-scorers with 14 points and eight rebounds. Marissa Layosa added 13 points and three rebounds. The Boxers shot 46.0% (29-63) from the floor and 28.6% (4-14) from three point range. 

Whitworth will play Lewis & Clark on Saturday at 4:00 PM.
