Pirate lacrosse picks up first win of 2023

SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth University rolled to a 19-7 win over visiting Multnomah University in the WhitLax Classic on Saturday at the Whitworth Pine Bowl.

The Pirates (1-1) picked up their first win of the season while the NAIA Lions dropped their season-opener.

Whitworth jumped ahead 6-2 after one quarter and outscored Multnomah 7-1 in the second for a 13-3 lead at halftime.  The second half was played with a running clock and the Pirates outscored the Lions 6-4 after the break.

Kylee Walker scored a career-high four goals for Whitworth, while Megan Whitman, Anna Chase and Kenzie Hemman added three goals each.  Liliann Penfield scored twice. Rebecca Irwin and Sierra Witte had two assists apiece for the Bucs.

Whitworth finished with 19 draw controls to only seven for Multnomah, enabling the Pirates to control possession.  Witte had eight of those and Hemman had five.  Hemman led the Bucs defensive as well with five caused turnovers and six ground balls.

Aviana Gonazales scored five of Multnomah's goals, three in the final three minutes of the match after Whitworth had opened a 19-4 lead.

The Pirates will open Northwest Conference play at home next weekend against Pacific (Ore.) and Willamette.

The tournament concludes on Sunday morning as Multnomah plays Whitman.  Whitman fell 17-15 to Southwestern (Texas) in Saturday's first match.
