Pirates double up Pacific in NWC opener

SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth doubled up visiting Pacific University 10-5 in a Northwest Conference women's lacrosse match on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Pine Bowl.

Rebecca Irwin scored three goals for the Pirates (2-1 overall, 1-0 NWC), who claimed their second straight win in the young season.  It was the Boxers' season opener.

Whitworth led from the opening possession, scoring on Sierra Witte's goal after the Pirates won the opening draw control.  The Pirates led 3-1 after the first period, which included a player-up goal by Megan Whitman.

Whitworth continued to build the lead in the second period.  Kenzie Hemman scored back to back goals to extend the margin to 6-1 and Witte made it 7-2 with a late goal.  The Bucs outshot the Boxers 21-5 in the first half.  Hemman and Maddie Jennings led the defensive effort in the first half, with four and three caused turnovers, respectively.  Witte had seven of the Pirates' eight draw controls.

Pacific made things interesting in the third, pulling within 7-4 on consecutive goals by Hyland Cullen-Musengo.  Irwin ended the run with a free position goal late in the third for an 8-4 lead.

Neither team scored through the first ten minutes of the fourth quarter until Whitman scored her second player-up goal of the game.  Irwin scored unassisted less than a minute later for the final Whitworth goal.  Pacific scored its final goal with 1:24 to play.

Witte filled the stat sheet with two goals, nine draw controls, eight ground balls and four caused turnvoers.  Hemman and Jennings led the Bucs with five caused turnovers each.

Whitworth will take on Linfield on Sunday at 1:30 pm.
