Pirates fall short in comeback

SPOKANE, Wash. – Chariah Daniels led Walla Walla with 16 points including four in the final 1:30 to hold off a furious Whitworth comeback, and the Wolves beat the Pirates for the first time in program history 62-56 on Thursday night at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

With 3:54 to go, Walla Walla (2-1) had watched its 20-point halftime lead cut to three. With the Pirates threatening, Daniels buried shots with 1:28 and 25 seconds left to sink the Pirates' comeback hopes.

Cheyenne Rodgers led the Pirates with 14 points including 12 in the second half to spark what was nearly a historic comeback for Whitworth. Jaliyah Casem added 15 for Walla Walla playing through foul trouble.

The Wolves pounced on Whitworth from the opening tip, beating the Pirates in transition early as they went on a 9-0 run in 1:19 to force a timeout from Whitworth. Walla Walla (2-1) has outscored its opponents 64-33 in the first quarter this season.

Walla Walla blew the game open with a 12-2 run through the final four minutes of the half. The Pirates turned it over three times during that stretch and trailed 38-18 at halftime, finishing the first half 7-36 from the floor (2-20 from behind the arc).

But Whitworth came out hot in the third outscoring the Wolves 26-13 in the frame. Rodgers scored nine points in the third to spark the comeback, and the Pirates closed the quarter with a 12-2 run of their own capped off by a buzzer beating three from Dawson Driggs to cut the deficit to 51-44.

Whitworth threatened further as Ashlyn Neilsen buried a three to start the fourth before striking again with 3:54 to get Whitworth within a possession at 55-52, but they couldn't complete the comeback in what was a defensive fourth quarter.

Neither team shot it well from three, the Pirates finished 7-36 (19.4%) from three while the Wolves were 4-21 (19%) from range. Whitworth has shot a combined 24% from the field over the past two games, they will look to hit their stride as conference play approaches.

The Pirates will hit the road to play Northwest Nazarene on Saturday while the Wolves will travel to Portland to take on Lewis & Clark.
