SPOKANE, Wash.— Turnovers plagued Whitworth as they fell 80-52 to visiting Puget Sound in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game on Saturday evening at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
Whitworth fell to 7-12 overall, 4-6 NWC and Puget Sound improved to 16-3, 9-1. The Loggers made 31 points off of 34 Pirate turnovers.
Whitworth kept things close with Puget Sound to start the first period until the Loggers went on a 7-0 run to take a 16-4 advantage with 2:25 remaining. The Pirates committed 12 turnovers in the opening frame alone, which translated to 18 points for Puget Sound. Kimberly Dewey's three pointer with 47 seconds remaining trimmed the margin, but UPS ended the quarter up 19-9.
Puget Sound opened the second period with seven straight points capped by Kennedy Brown's three pointer. The Pirates continued to battle but Jenai Ancheta's driving layup gave the Loggers their largest lead of the half up 35-15 with 4:27 remaining. Whitworth's Quincy McDeid sank a pair from the charity stripe to end the half down 40-23.
Whitworth's Devyn Cope opened the third quarter with a driving layup but Puget Sound's Jordyn Reverman matched it on the other end. The Pirates were unable to cut into the Logger lead and ended the period down 54-36.
Puget Sound opened the final frame with a 7-0 run capped by Paige Gernhart's jumper. The Loggers controlled the quarter, beating the Pirates 80-52.
Olivia Mayer led Whitworth with 13 points and eight rebounds. Dewey added seven points and nine rebounds. Whitworth made 17 of 48 (35.4%) from the floor and 6 of 24 (25.0%) from behind the arc. The Pirates outrebounded the Loggers 43-37.
Puget Sound's Sophie Nilsson and Kennedy Brown led all scorers with 16 points apiece. Jordyn Reverman added nine points. The Loggers shot 39.7% (27-68) from the floor and 35.3% (6-17) from three point range.
Whitworth will play Pacific (Ore.) on Friday at 6:00 PM.
