SPOKANE, Wash. — The Whitworth Pirates (3-2-1, 1-0) outscored the visiting Pacific (Ore.) University Boxers (0-4-1,0-1) 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in the Northwest Conference men's soccer opener for both teams.
The Pirates let Jericho Lara net a quick goal in the third minute after a failed drop pass from a Pirate defender back to the keeper was intercepted by Lara, who made them pay.
Jordan Voigt's header found the back of the net in the 32nd minute to even the score off of Jaime Rodriquez's corner kick.
Voigt added another in the 60th minute to give the Pirates the 2-1 victory over the Boxers. Chris Barry and Rodriguez were each credited with assists.
The Pirates were looking to score throughout the match, outshooting the Boxers 25-2 in total and 7-1 in shots on goal.
Pacific's goalkeeper Zach Aderinto was credited with eight saves in 90 minutes played. Andrew Wolotira had one save in 90 minutes for the Pirates.
Whitworth will play next on Sunday against George Fox at 2:30 PM on the Whitworth Soccer Field.
