Pirate men dominate opener

SPOKANE, Wash. — Six different players scored to lead Whitworth to a dominating win in the men's soccer season opener 7-1 over visiting Walla Walla University on Thursday afternoon at the Whitworth soccer field.

It was also the season opener for the Wolves.

The Pirates struck in the 6th minute with a goal from senior midfielder Chris Barry who took advantage of the opportunity after a corner kick.

The Wolves kept the match competitive with a breakaway goal from Addison Dobbs in the 18th minute.

Cole Friesen, making his Pirate debut, scored his own breakaway goal in the 25th minute, leading to a 2-1 Whitworth lead at halftime.

The Bucs totally dominated the second half despite playing every man on the roster.

Friesen got his second goal of the match in the second half.  Dominic Gusman, Eric Shaporda, Victor Loyola, and Jordan Voigt also scored for Whitworth. Beckett Arthur, Gusman, Voigt and Eli Lewis were each credited with assists in the second half.

The Pirates finished with a commanding 44-3 advantage in shots and 22-3 edge in shots on target. Whitworth had 16 corners and Walla Walla had one.

Whitworth will look to improve their record at home on Sunday at 4:00pm as they battle against another NAIA opponent, Carroll College.
