Box Score SALEM, Ore. – Visiting Whitworth University's 9-0 shutout of Willamette University on Friday afternoon secured a spot in next week's Northwest Conference women's tennis tournament.
The Pirates improved to 7-7 overall and 5-2 in the NWC and can now finish no worse than fourth place in the league standings. Saturday's season finale at Pacific University (9-8, 4-2) will determine third or fourth place in the final regular season standings.
Willamette dropped to 0-8, 0-7.
Whitworth won all three doubles matches in less than 45 minutes. Gracie Smyley and Jill Hughes rolled to an 8-0 win at #2. The Bucs won at #1 and #3 by 8-1 scores.
None of the singles matches went more than two sets. Aleah Kert won the closest contest at #1 singles, defeating Richelle Suzuki 6-3, 6-0. Nicole Resanovic won love and love at #5 singles, while three other singles matches were decided by 6-1, 6-1 scores.
