FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Visiting Whitworth dominated the second half to defeat Pacific (Ore.) 13-7 in a Northwest Conference women's lacrosse match on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates (2-2, 1-1) have won two games in a season for the first time in school history.
The Boxers (1-2, 0-3) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter. Vivian Mai scored two of those goals. But Whitworth was able to tie the match by the end of the opening period. Abby Hahn and Kenzie Hemmen had goals only 15 seconds apart.
Each team scored twice in the second quarter. Three of the goals came in the final two minutes. Hahn's second of the match tied the score at 4-4. Hemman's second, on an assist from Liliann Penfield, gave Whitworth its first lead. Pacific retied the contest 5-5 with seconds to play in the second quarter.
The Pirates outscored the Boxers 3-0 in the third quarter. Penfield scored two straight goals to open an 8-6 lead. Hemman's third of the match made it 8-5 after three periods.
After Mai scored her third of the match to pull Pacific within 8-6 in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter, Whitworth put the match away with five consecutive goals. Five different players scored during that Pirate runs, including Hemman's fourth of the match. Madison Perry had a goal and an assist during that scoring run.
Whitworth outshot Pacific 31-15, including a 25-11 edge in shots on goal. The Pirates drew 12 free position shots and scored on six of those attempts. The Bucs won 13 of the 24 draw controls.
Whitworth will play at Whitman on Wednesday afternoon before hosting Puget Sound on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
