SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but visiting Puget Sound scored the next seven goals and went on to defeat the Pirates 17-7 in a Northwest Conference women's lacrosse match on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Pine Bowl.
The Pirates dropped to 2-3 overall, 1-2 in the NWC while the Loggers improved to 2-1, 2-1.
Grace Curley scored less than ten seconds into the match, the fastest goal in Whitworth history, on an assist from Kylee Walker. Three minutes later Walker assisted on a goal by Kenzie Hemman and the Pirates had a 2-0 lead.
But Milan Lam and Hayden Hotchkiss each scored a pair of goals as Puget Sound used a 7-0 run to take control. Abby Hahn scored for Whitworth at the end of the first to make it 7-3.
Puget Sound outscored the Pirates 6-0 in the second quarter. Hannah Bushing scored four of those goals for the Loggers, who led 13-3 at halftime.
Madison Perry scored twice and added an assist in the second half, while Walker added a goal to her two assists from the first quarter.
Perry and Curley each scored twice for the Pirates. Bushing finished with six goals for Puget Sound, while Lam had five.
Puget Sound outshot Whitworth 29-15. Hannah Lew made four saves for the Pirates, while Sage Fosnock stopped two shots.
Whitworth will head to Texas for a pair of spring break matches at Southwestern University and University of Dallas on March 26-27.
