SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth picked up its first men's tennis win of the season in resounding fashion with an 8-1 Northwest Conference victory over visiting Puget Sound on Saturday at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The Pirates (1-9, 1-2) swept the doubles and took five of six singles matches against the Loggers (0-3, 0-2).
Nathan Tjelle and Payton Romey made quick work of Will Church and Brayden Sawyer at #2 doubles for the Bucs' first point. Ethan Warring and Cameron Brewer followed with an 8-4 victory at #3. Ethan Violette and Joe Greco pulled out a hard-fought 8-6 win over Trent Beckman and Noah Henderson at #1 for a 3-0 Pirate advantage.
Whitworth quickly clinched the team victory when Warring swept Church 6-0, 6-0 at #3 singles and Violette topped Beckman 6-1, 6-2 at #1 singles.
Greco nearly blanked Nicholas Pulido 6-1, 6-0 at #4 singles and Tjelle rolled past Sawyer 6-2, 6-0 at #5 singles. Romey defeated Conor Blakeney 6-2, 6-2 at #6.
Henderson got Puget Sound's only point of the day with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Jonathan Hutley at #3 singles. That made the team score 5-1 at the time.
The Pirates host Pacific Lutheran on Sunday looking for a second straight win.
