SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth earned its second straight Northwest Conference men's tennis win with an 8-1 victory over visiting Pacific Lutheran on Sunday.
The Pirates (2-9, 2-2) will host NAIA Lewis-Clark St. in a non-conference doubleheader next Saturday.
Whitworth jumped out to a 3-0 lead by sweeping the doubles. Ethan Warring and Cameron Brewer shut out Alex Richter and Drew Kraft 8-0 in less than 30 minutes at #3 doubles. By contrast, Ethan Violette and Joe Greco battled for over an hour to beat Michael Campbell and Hampus Pers-Eliasson 8-7 (12-10) at #1 doubles. Nathan Tjelle and Payton Romey won 8-5 at #2.
The Pirates quickly clinched the team victory when Jonathan Hutley defeated Pers-Eliasson 6-0, 6-2 at #2 singles and Warring beat Derek Stone 6-2, 6-0 at #3.
Greco won 6-1, 6-1 at #4, Tjelle took #5 singles 6-0, 6-3 and Romey rolled 6-0, 6-0 at #6.
PLU got its only point when Campbell edged Violette 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6).
