Box Score 2 SEGUIN, Texas – Chassety Raines hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift 3rd-ranked Texas Lutheran to a 4-2 win in the nightcap and a sweep of a non-conference softball doubleheader over visiting Whitworth on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs won the opener 9-1 in five innings at Morck Softball Field.
Whitworth (2-2) will complete its opening trip to Texas with a doubleheader at Trinity on Sunday. TLU won its first two games of the season.
Game 1 – TLU 9, Whitworth 1 (5 innings)
The game was scoreless into the fourth, but the Bulldogs scored all of their runs in the bottom of that inning to gain a season opening win.
Corrine Vassiloff was strong through three innings and Whitworth took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Heather Menzer hit her first home run of the season.
The Bulldogs found holes in the Pirates' defense in the bottom of the frame, stringing together nine runs on nine hits. Kelly Jurden got TLU on the board with a two-run single. Bailey Hudgeons closed out the rally with a three-run home run.
Jazz Johnson and Maddy Thomas had the other two Pirate hits in the game. Vassiloff (1-1) gave up nine runs on 12 hits in 4.1 innings.
Kylee Jack finished 3-3 at the plate for the Bulldogs with a run and an RBI. Ashlyn Strother (1-0) allowed one run on three hits in 5.0 innings. She struck out seven.
Game 2 – TLU 4, Whitworth 2
Whitworth looked poised to pull off the upset in the second game after taking a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh, but the Bulldogs rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning.
TLU took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double by Murphy Williams.
The Pirates scratched out a tying run in the top of the fifth when Delayna Waite scored on a throwing error. Whitworth went ahead in the seventh after Rylee Gentner scored from second on an error at third base.
Williams tied the game with one out in the bottom of the seventh with her second RBI double of the contest. Raines followed with her game-winning home run to right field.
Momi Lyman (1-1) went all the way in the circle for the Pirates, allowing four runs on 11 hits in 6.1 innings. Sydney Ouellette (1-0) got the win for TLU after giving up two runs (none earned) on four hits in 6.1 innings.
