KERRVILLE, Texas – Corrine Vasiloff and Momi Lyman tossed a pair of complete games to lift visiting Whitworth to a sweep at Schreiner (Texas) in the Pirates' 2022 softball season-opening games.
Whitworth (2-0) won its first two games of the season for the first time since 2016. The Mountaineers (0-5) lost by more than one run for the first time this season.
The Pirates will play two games at 3rd-ranked Texas Lutheran on Saturday.
Game 1: Whitworth 6, Schreiner 2
Maddy Thomas hit a second inning grand slam and finished with five RBIs to back Vasiloff's complete game effort in the Pirates' season opener.
Whitworth took advantage of two Schreiner errors in the top of the first inning. Haley Montoya reached on an error leading off the game and scored on an error with Heather Menzer at the plate.
After Lyman doubled to lead off the second, Rylee Gentner walked and Mattea Nelson was hit by a pitch to lead the bases with one out. After Jazz Johnson struck out, Thomas lofted a high fly ball over the left field wall for the grand slam and a 5-0 lead.
Schreiner got a run back in the bottom of the second when Taci Tatum doubled and scored on a single by Marley Carrizales. But Vasiloff struck out Danielle Pedraza with the bases loaded to end the threat.
The Pirates added a run in the sixth when Nelson singled with one out, went to third on a single by Johnson and scored on a Thomas sacrifice fly.
Schreiner scored its final run when Tatum again led off with a double and scored on a Carrizales ground out.
Whitworth finished the game with only six hits, but took advantage of six walks and two hit batters.
Vasiloff went the distance, allowing two earned runs on eight hits. She struck out three batters and walked four, forcing the Mountaineers to leave ten runners on base.
Kaylee Culpepper (0-2) allowed five runs (four earned) on only two hits in two innings and suffered the loss.
Game 2: Whitworth 4, Schreiner 2
Montoya went 3-5 with a pair of RBIs to back Montoya's Pirate debut in the pitching circle.
The Mountaineers took the lead in the bottom of the first when Carrizales scored on a ground out by Kennedy Moody.
Whitworth took the lead in the top of the second. Gentner reached on an error to lead off the inning and went to second on a walk. After an out, Montoya singled home Gentner and Nelson followed with an RBI hit.
Schreiner tied the game in the fourth when Hannah Kollmansberger walked with the bases loaded.
The Pirates got the winning run in the sixth when Montoya scored from second following a single by Johnson and an error in right field.
Montoya singled home Gentner in the top of the seventh with a key insurance run.
Lyman (1-0) allowed two runs on seven hits and five walks. She struck out two batters. Bri Wodtke (0-2) allowed four runs (two earned) on nine hits in seven innings. She walked six and struck out four.
