SPOKANE, Wash.— Whitworth had a one point lead at the half but visiting Cal Lutheran pulled away in the second half to win 66-47 in a non-conference women's basketball game on Thursday afternoon.
Pirate turnovers directly led to 35 points for visiting Cal Lutheran.
Whitworth and Cal Lutheran were competitive in the opening frame, trading baskets to end the period tied 15-15.
Cal Lutheran opened the second period with a 8-2 run to take a 23-17 lead with 5:41 remaining. Whitworth's Olivia Mayer made two free throws in the final seconds to take a 30-29 lead at the half. The Pirates outscored the Regals 13-6 in the final five minutes.
Cal Lutheran's Naomi Gipson knocked down a trey to cap a 6-0 run to start the period and put the Regals up 35-30. Sydney McLean's three-pointer with 6:34 left put Whitworth up 38-37, but it was the Pirates last lead of the game. The Regals responded with a 6-0 run to end the third quarter and take a 51-42 lead.
CLU's shots continued to fall in the final frame, but the Pirates were unable to respond. Cal Lutheran's defense held Whitworth to their worst quarter of shooting this season, with the Pirates shooting just 6.3% from the floor in the fourth quarter. The Regals outscored Whitworth 15-5 to beat Whitworth 66-47.
Mayer posted her ninth double-double performance of the season to lead Whitworth with 13 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and six blocks. Quincy McDeid had 10 points and Kimberly Dewey added eight.
Cal Lutheran's Janna Holley led all scorers with 22 points and eight rebounds. Sara Mills and Karina McMillan each added 12 points.
Whitworth shot 25.4% (15-59) from the floor, made 7-28 (25.0%) from three-point range and were 10-12 (83.3%) from the charity stripe.
Cal Lutheran made 26-68 (38.2%) from the floor, was 3-12 (25.0%) from three and were 11-12 (91.7%) from the free throw line. The Regals outrebounded the Pirates 48-40.
Whitworth will play Lewis & Clark on January 6th at 2:00 PM.
