Whitworth falls to L&C 93-90 in double OT

SPOKANE, Wash. – Karli Mukai set a Lewis & Clark school record with 38 points to lead the visiting Pioneers to a dramatic come-from-behind double overtime win at Whitworth, 93-90, on Friday night in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

L&C improved to 2-10 overall and 1-2 in the NWC while the Pirates dropped to 4-8, 1-2.  The Pioneers did not lead in regulation and did not tie the game until the final seconds.

Whitworth started the opening frame sinking three straight three pointers to take a 9-0 lead and force a Pioneer timeout early. The Pirates continued to shoot well the remainder of the period, shooting 75% (6-8) from three point range and 60% (9-15) from the floor to take a 26-15 lead.

Karli Mukai's layup with 5:17 remaining in the second quarter brought the Pioneers to within seven. Whitworth responded with a 10-0 run to finish the period and take a 44-26 lead at the half.

Whitworth and Lewis & Clark traded buckets to start the quarter but the Pioneers went on an 11-0 run midway through the period to get within six. Tara Kanashiro's jumper gave the Pirates a 61-48 lead to end the quarter.

In the fourth period, L&C's Mukai knocked down a trey with 2:08 remaining to cut the Pirate lead to 67-64. Whitworth had a two point lead with 16 seconds remaining, but the Pioneer's Piper Curry made a layup to tie the game 71-71 and force extra time. Kanashiro had a chance before the clock hit zero but her shot did not fall.

Both teams struggled offensively in the first overtime, each only scoring five points. Mukai came up big for Pioneers, knocking down another three-pointer with 1:30 remaining to keep the score tied 76-76 and force double overtime.

In double overtime, Quincy McDeid's three-pointer put the Pirates up 83-81 with 2:42 remaining. Mukai took control of the L&C offense and scored nine straight points to give the Pioneers a 90-85 lead with 27 seconds remaining. Whitworth's Kimberly Dewey made two free throws with 10 seconds remaining to get within 92-90. Mukai's free throw on the other end gave L&C a three point advantage. Kanashiro three-pointer at the buzzer did not fall and the Pioneers escaped with a 93-90 win over the Pirates.
