Whitworth Men Net First Win of Season

SPOKANE, Wash. – Beckett Arthur scored twice, while Dominic Gusman had a goal and two assists to lead Whitworth to its first men's soccer win of the season with a 4-0 shutout of visiting Lawrence (Wis.) on Saturday.

The Pirates improved to 1-0-1.  Whitworth was supposed to have two matches this weekend, but Fontbonne (Mo.) was unable to travel this week because of COVID-19 issues.  Instead Lawrence will play Whitman College at Whitworth on Sunday at 11:30.

The Pirates struck early and often.

Arthur did all the work himself on the opening goal.  He dribbled through a pair of defenders on the left side of the box and beat Viking goalkeeper Hunter Lanton from close range in the 10th minute.

Whitworth scored its second goal six minutes later when Gusman ran under a long pass, outdueled a defender and flicked on to Jaime Rodriguez in the middle of the box, who scored his first goal of the season.

Gusman scored in the 20th minute when he took a pass from Liam McGehee and dribbled around Lanton, depositing the ball into an open net.

The Pirates scored their final goal less than one minute later as Gusman drove hard into the box, dropped a pass to the right side and Arthur scored from that rightside angle.

Whitworth did not score again, but controlled play despite playing its entire roster.  The Pirates finished with a 17-7 edge in shots, 10-3 in shots on target.  Whitworth had six corners and Lawrence had none.  The Bucs controlled 68% of the possession in the match.

Bo Broyles played the first 45 minutes and made two saves for Whitworth.  Joshua Hill played the second half and made one stop.

Lanton finished with six saves for the Vikings.
