Loggers Edge Pirates in Double Overtime

TACOMA, Wash.— Puget Sound scored the match's only goal two minutes into the second overtime to beat visiting Whitworth 1-0 in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Saturday afternoon. 

Marko Babiak scored the match-winner for the Loggers (2-3-1, 1-0-1 NWC). The Pirates (3-3-1, 2-1) will try to rebound at league-leading Pacific Lutheran on Sunday.

Both teams played a quiet first half offensively, with the Pirates tallying four shots and only one on goal to the Loggers' five shots and two on goal. Puget Sound had eight corner kicks in the first half but failed to capitalize on any of them.

Both teams' goalkeepers were busy in the second half, as Whitworth goalkeeper Andrew Wolotira faced seven shots on goal and recorded seven saves. The Loggers tallied nine total shots in the second half. Puget Sound goalkeeper Andrew Matheny faced five shots on goal and tallied five saves. The Pirates recorded nine total shots in the half. Each team had four corner kicks.

Each team had one shot on goal in the first ten-minute overtime period, but none were successful. Whitworth notched two shots to the Loggers' three.

The Pirates didn't record a shot in the second overtime period, but faced two Puget Sound shots, both of which were on goal. Babiak's goal came in the 102nd minute on a solo shot that found the lower right side of the net.

Wolotira finished the game with nine saves, and Matheny finished with six.
