Pirate Men Draw in first Match

SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth battled back for a 1-1 draw with visiting Carleton College in the 2021 men's soccer season opener for both schools on Wednesday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.

Johnathan Guglielmetti drilled a penalty kick in the 87th minute to pull the Pirates into a tie.  Dominic Gusman forced the penalty when his hard shot was stopped by a Knight defender.

Neither team was able to tally a match winner in either overtime period.  Whitworth had the advantage in shots on goal after regulation (5-1), but only one forced a save from Carleton keeper Alexei Thomas.  That shot came early in the first extra period and was directly at Thomas.

Jeremiah Lanzillo gave the Knights the lead in the 16th minute when her corralled a long pass in from Jon Fernandes, turned and fired past Pirate keeper Bo Broyles into the lower-right corner of the goal.

Carleton controlled the first half, outshooting Whitworth 5-1 and posting a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

But Whitworth began to establish itself after halftime, outshooting the Knights 8-6 and gaining more time on the ball.  Thomas was forced to make two saves in the second half before the Pirates got their late equalizer.

Thomas finished the match with three saves, while Broyles had a pair of stops for the Bucs.  Whitworth ended the match with a 14-12 advantage in shots, and a 4-3 edge in shots on goal.

The Pirates will continue at home on Saturday with a match against Lawrence (Wis.).  What was supposed to be a weekend tournament was truncated after Fontbonne University cancelled its trip to Spokane for Covid-related issues.
