Box Score SALEM, Ore. – Whitworth clinched the #2 seed at next weekend's Northwest Conference women's tennis tournament with a 9-0 win over visiting Willamette on Saturday at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The Pirates (9-5 overall, 6-2 NWC) finished tied for second in the NWC standings with George Fox (6-2), but earn the #2 seed based on a head-to-head victory over the Bruins earlier this season. Whitworth has won seven straight matches.
Willamette (0-9 overall, 1-7 NWC) will try for its first official win of the season in a non-conference match against the Pirates on Sunday. The Bearcats gained a forfeit win over Whitman earlier this season that counted as a no-contest on the overall record.
Whitworth rolled through the doubles matches. Avery Liening and Aleah Kert didn't lose a game in their 8-0 win at #1 doubles. Hannah Plank and Lauren Ikeda only gave up one game in their 8-1 win at #2. Kyndal Locati and Froukje Lakerveld also only lost one game at #3 doubles.
Only one singles match was competitive, and that match came at #1 singles where Liening edged Sarah Dean 7-5, 6-4. No other Pirate player lost one than one game.
The NWC tournament will take place next weekend at top-seeded Linfield College. Whitworth and George Fox will meet in the first round.
