SPOKANE, Wash. – Jadyn Baumgartner converted a penalty kick in overtime to lift the Whitworth women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over visiting Puget Sound in Saturday's Northwest Conference match in the Pine Bowl.
Baumgartner scored two goals for Whitworth (2-1-1) to hand Puget Sound (5-2) its second loss of the year. The Loggers had allowed just one goal all season prior to this game.
The Loggers threatened early, forcing Whitworth goalkeeper Rachel McGlothlen to make a diving save two minutes into the match, stopping a shot from Rylee Maclennan in a one-on-one situation.
Baumgartner gave the Pirates the 1-0 lead in the 25th minute. Hailey Ovenell sent a pass to the far post where the senior was waiting to send in her shot.
The Loggers responded less than three minutes later with a goal from Maiya Placeb to tie the match at 1-1. Kiana Serrao was credited with the assist.
The Pirates outshot the Loggers 6-3 in second half but neither team was able to get on the scoreboard.
Baumgartner converted on the Pirates' penalty kick two and a half minutes into overtime to seal the 2-1 win. It was Baumgartner's fourth goal of the season.
Whitworth finished with the lead in shots (11-9), but UPS had a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. McGlothlen made six saves for the Pirates, while Chaylea Tome finished with four for the Loggers.
Whitworth and Puget Sound battle again tomorrow at 11 a.m.
