SPOKANE, Wash.—Second-ranked Whitman pulled away from a halftime tie to defeat Whitworth 76-59 in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game on Tuesday night in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
Whitman (7-0 overall, 2-0 NWC) ended the first quarter up 19-18, but the two teams were about equal in every statistical category. The Blues shot 52.9% from the field, and Whitworth shot 53.3%. However, the Pirates shot 66.7% from beyond the arc compared to Whitman's 0-5. Each team had eight rebounds, and the Pirates had two offensive rebounds to the Blues' three.
Whitworth (3-5, 0-2) outshot Whitman in the second quarter, shooting 66.7% from the field, including 2-2 from three-point range. The Blues shot 46.7% from the field and 1-4 from three. The Pirates had six rebounds to the Blues' five in the quarter. Whitworth tied the game on Quincy McDeid's basket in the last minute and then closed out on defense to leave the game tied at 34-34 at half.
The Blues surged in the third quarter, outscoring the Pirates 23-12. They shot 56.3% to the Pirates 26.3%. Kaelan Shamsheldin scored nine points on three three-pointers to lead the visitors. Whitman tallied twelve rebounds and the Pirates had ten.
Whitman outscored Whitworth in the fourth quarter by six points. The Pirates shot 27.8% from the field and 20% from three as they upped the tempo to try and cut the deficit. Whitworth got within eight points (63-55) on McDeid's three-pointer with four minutes to play, but could get no closer. The Blues shot 54.5% from the field and didn't attempt a single three in the quarter. Whitman out-rebounded Whitworth 11-8 in the quarter.
Megan Dorney recorded a double-double for the Pirates with 19 points and 11 rebounds, the first double-double of the season for Whitworth. McDeid added 16 points.
Kaylie McCraken had a double-double for the Blues with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Korin Baker recorded 17 points and 7 rebounds.
Whitworth will travel to play Colorado College in the Kim Evanger Raney classic in Walla Walla, Washington on Saturday at 4pm.
