WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Whitworth bounced back from a bad first quarter by dominating the second and third periods in a 69-56 win over Colorado College in the opening game of the Kim Evanger Raney Classic on Saturday afternoon at Whitman College.
Megan Dorney had 18 points and 11 rebounds, her second double-double in as many games for the Pirates (4-5). Whitworth will take on Walla Walla University on Sunday at 2:00 pm in its second game at the Raney Classic.
Colorado College (3-5) jumped out to a 19-11 lead after the first quarter. The Tigers made 47% of their shots in the period while holding Whitworth to only 28% (5-18). CC out rebounded Whitworth 13-8.
Rosie Braley scored on a layup on the Tigers' first possession of the second quarter to give Colorado College its largest lead of the game at 21-11. But Kimberly Dewey answered with a three-pointer for the Pirates. Trailing 26-20 midway through the second, Whitworth closed on a 12-1 run for a 32-27 halftime lead. Quincy McDeid scored eight of those points, including a pair of three-pointers.
Dewey opened the second half with another trey and the Pirates kept the pressure on in the third period. Leading 49-39 with 3:14 left, Whitworth outscored Colorado College 7-0 the rest of the quarter, including baskets by Dorney and Olivia Mayer. The Bucs led 56-39 after three periods.
Mayer's basket midway through the fourth gave Whitworth its largest lead of the game (19 points) at 64-45 with 5:29 to play. Colorado College hit consecutive three-pointers to cap an 11-1 run to pull within 66-56 with three minutes to play. But Whitworth's defense stiffened and the Tigers would not score again.
Dorney made 8 of 12 shots from the field and two free throws for her 18 points. McDeid and Dewey added 13 points apiece and for Dewey that is a career-high total. After the cold first quarter, the Pirates made 56% in the second, 61% in the third and finished the game 25-57 (44%) from the floor. The Bucs were 6-15 (40%) from beyond the arc.
Anna Fanelli led Colorado College with 15 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. The Tigers, who play host Whitman College on Sunday at noon, made only 32% (23-71) of their shots, including 22% (5-22) from beyond the arc.
