SALEM, Ore – A goal only one minute into the game set the tone as Willamette defeated visiting Whitworth 3-0 in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Sunday afternoon.
The Bearcats (11-4-1 overall, 9-3-1 NWC) evened the season series with the Pirates (8-8-1, 7-6) and ended a three-match losing streak to Whitworth.
Ali Abdul finished a play that started with Luke Varav's throw in and headed on by Omar Dominguez Pascasio only 60 seconds into the match for a 1-0 Willamette lead.
Sean Kim scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 25th minute from an assist by Ardem Baronian. Willamette closed out the scoring five minutes later on a goal by Edwin Ortiz. Dominguez Pascasio and Mack van der Velde were credited with assists.
Neither team found the net in the second half. Whitworth outshot the Bearcats 7-6 after halftime.
Bo Broyles played the first 76 minutes in goal for the Pirates and had five saves. Andrew Wolotira made two stops over the final 14 minutes. Pierluca Carnivale made seven saves while posting a shutout for Willamette.
Whitworth will close out the 2021 season at home next Saturday against Whitman. Three seniors will be honored as they suit up for the final time as Pirates.
