Shaporda's goal lifts Whitworth men to OT win

McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Eric Shaporda scored in the 103rd minute to lift visiting Whitworth to a 2-1 win at Linfield in double overtime of a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Saturday afternoon.

The Pirates won their second straight contest to improve to 8-7-1 overall and 7-5 in the NWC. The Wildcats dropped to 1-13-2, 0-10-2.

Whitworth scored in the 36th minute when Ethan Kem chipped a pass over Linfield keeper Julian Inches to Victor Loyola, who finished for his second goal of the season.

Seamus Miller tied the match for the hosts in the third minute of the second half on a penalty kick for his team-leading fifth goal of the year.

The match remained tied through regulation and the first overtime, despite the fact that the Pirates dominated the extra period and outshot the Wildcats 4-1 in that first extra 10 minutes.

Shaporda took a pass from Tycen Santos, got past the defense and beat Inches for his first goal of the fall.

Bo Broyles made four saves for the Bucs, while Inches stopped five shots for Linfield.

Whitworth finished with slight advantages in overall shots (17-16) and shots on-goal (7-5).

The Pirates complete the weekend with a match at second-place Willamette on Sunday afternoon.
