Pirate Men Pound Puget Sound 3-1

SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth ended a two-match scoreless streak with a 3-1 win over visiting Puget Sound in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Sunday afternoon.

The Pirates (7-7-1 overall, 6-5 NWC) had lost their last two matches by identical 3-0 scores.  The Loggers (5-6-3, 4-4-3) dropped both games in Eastern Washington this weekend.

The first half hour was quiet until a flurry of action over the next eight minutes.

Puget Sound scored first when Cale Spance worked through the defense to finish with a left-footed shot in the 32nd minute that found the mark for his fifth goal of the season.

Andyn Maldonado headed in a shot in the 35th minute to tie the match.  It was his second goal of the year.  Jose Bautista added his second goal of the season in the 38th minute, heading in a corner kick by Jaime Rodriguez for a 2-1 Pirate lead.

Whitworth had a chance to extend the lead in the 53rd minute when UPS keeper Andrew Matheny was issued a red card for a foul on the Pirates' breakaway.  Eric Shaporda was unable to convert the penalty kick, keeping the lead at a single goal.

The Pirates finally tallied an insurance goal in the 90th minute when Beckett Arthur scored his 11th of the season on an assist by Dominic Gusman.

Whitworth finished with a 17-14 advantage in total shots, though UPS led in shots on-goal (8-7).  The Pirates had 10 corner kicks to five for the Loggers.

Bo Broyes made seven saves for Whitworth, while Matheny had three for Puget Sound.  Ryan Saunders made one save in relief for the Loggers.

The Pirates hit the road next weekend for matches at Linfield and Willamette.
