SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The visiting Whitworth softball team closed the non-conference schedule with a series split against Trinity, winning game one 4-3 before falling 3-1 in game two.
Whitworth moved to 4-6 on the season after going 2-4 on its six-game Texas road trip. The Tigers move to 4-4.
Game 1 – Whitworth 4, Trinity 3
Whitworth scored a pair of runs in each of the first two innings to take the series opener.
Kaylie Lowery led off the game with a double to left center and was driven in by Heather Menzer on an RBI single to left. Maddy Thomas was hit by a pitch to reach base, eventually scoring on a wild pitch.
Brynn Radke led off the second inning with an infield single and crossed the plate after Delayna Waite tripled to right center. Lowery followed with an RBI single to score Waite and give the Pirates the 4-0 lead.
Trinity got back within one with a three-run third. The Tigers opened the inning with a pair of base hits from Danielle Ruiz and Kristina Kish. Ruiz scored on a fielder's choice and Brianna Pena followed with a two-RBI double in the next at-bat.
Drea Schwaier-Wolf allowed just two hits through the remaining four innings to edge the Tigers in game one. She allowed three runs on five hits in seven innings to improve to 3-2 in the circle.
Lowery finished 3-4 with a double, one RBI and a run scored.
Cat Patterson (0-3) took the loss after allowing nine hits in seven innings for Trinity.
Game 2 – Trinity 3, Whitworth 1
Whitworth finished with a 6-4 advantage in hits, but Trinity held on to earn the series split behind Allie Holbrook's (2-1) complete game performance in the circle. Holbrook did not walk any Pirate batters.
Just like in game one, Trinity had a three-run bottom of the third. Patterson's two-out bases-clearing double to left center drove in all three runs. That was the only hit of the inning as Tiger batters had worked three walks.
The Pirates had two runners in scoring position with no outs to open the top of the sixth as Logan Miller got on base with an infield single followed by a double from Sara Gayer. A sacrifice fly from Menzer brought Miller home to narrow the Pirates' deficit to two runs.
Kylie Harris (0-2) got the loss after pitching the first 2.2 innings, allowing three runs on one hit and three walks.
Miller was the only Pirate to record multiple hits, finishing the game 3-3 and scoring the lone Whitworth run.
Coming Up: Whitworth opens Northwest Conference play on the road against Lewis & Clark on March 7-8.
