by Kelsey Segren, Sports Information Assistant

SEGUIN, Texas – Texas Lutheran shut out visiting Whitworth twice to earn the series sweep, holding the Pirates to just five hits on the day, in Saturday's doubleheader at Ed Kruse Stadium.

The Bulldogs (8-0) remain undefeated on the year with the pair of victories. The Pirates drop to 3-5.

Game 1 – Texas Lutheran 5, Whitworth 0

Chassety Raines threw a two-hit complete game in the opener. The Bulldogs did not allow any Pirates to get in scoring position.

Maria Smith and Ashley Bartels both managed singles off Raines.

Kylie Harris allowed five runs, three earned, on six hits and two walks over six innings in the circle for Whitworth. The Pirate defense committed three errors on the game.

Cassie Roche drove in all three of the Bulldogs' earned runs. Roche knocked in the first with a single in the second and the next with a double in the fourth. A Pirate error brought home Roche for the 3-0 lead after four innings. TLU scored the final two runs in the sixth, the first on a wild pitch and the final run on a sacrifice fly from Roche.

Game 2 – Texas Lutheran 8, Whitworth 0 (6 innings)

The Bulldogs run-ruled the Pirates in game two after closing with three runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth.

Kayla Oliveira and Ashlyn Strother split time in the circle for TLU, holding the Pirates to three hits, walking none and combining for seven strikeouts.

The Pirates threatened in the top of the first after Sara Gayer singled and Maddy Thomas was hit by a pitch, but Oliveira ended the threat with a strikeout.

Texas Lutheran took an early 4-0 lead after scoring a pair of runs in the first and second innings. A base hit from Raines brought in the first two. Roche continued her big day with an RBI bunt single and was brought home on a sacrifice fly from Kelly Jurden.

TLU extended its lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth after an RBI double from Rebecca Snow. Snow then hit a two-run homer in the sixth. The Bulldogs continued the rally with three base hits and a hit batter, all with no outs, to secure the win on the eight-run rule.

Melanie Laronde relieved Drea Schwaier-Wolf (2-2) after 2.1 innings of work. Schwaier-Wolf allowed four runs on six hits. Laronde allowed four runs on five hits and walked three in the loss.

Coming Up: Whitworth closes the Texas road trip tomorrow with a doubleheader against Trinity (Tex.) beginning at 10 a.m.
