WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Whitworth Pirates earned their third consecutive win, defeating host Walla Walla University 70-62 in Monday's non-conference women's basketball game.
Quincy McDeid led Whitworth (6-2) with 15 points. Macey Morales scored a career-high 14 points, shooting 3-6 from beyond the arc. Sydney Abbott added 12 points, going 6-6 from the free throw line.
Isabella Robles scored 23 points for Walla Walla (2-9, 0-2). Paulina Quintana and Jaliyah Casem each totaled 12 points.
Whitworth led by as many as 13 points in the first quarter, taking advantage of some early WWU fouls. The Pirates went 7-10 from the free throw line through the period as the Wolves had already tallied nine fouls. The Bucs led 21-8 going into the second quarter.
Isabella Robles scored the Wolves' first basket in over four minutes as they trailed 22-11 with 07:47 remaining in the second. Robles scored nine points for the Wolves in the second.
The Pirates brought their lead back to 13 points (33-20) after an Abbott layup and a pair of Morales free throws with just under two minutes remaining in the quarter. The Pirates took a 38-26 advantage into the break.
Walla Walla outscored Whitworth 8-1 to open the third quarter, pulling its deficit to 39-34. The Wolves had the momentum, pulling within two after three-pointers from Robles and Casem brought the score to 49-47 with just over a minute remaining in the period. Jacqueline Saucedo tied the game at 49-49 on a layup to finish the Wolves' 8-0 run and close the third quarter.
Robles gave WWU its first lead of the game to open the fourth up 51-49.
Morgan Winder started a 6-0 run to give the Pirates a 56-52 lead with 07:12 left. Winder was followed up with baskets from Talia Brandner and McDeid. Morales extended the Pirates' lead to seven after a making a three with 01:11 left in regulation. The Pirates went 6-6 from the free throw line in the final 30 seconds to close the game.
Whitworth shot 39.6% from the floor and 23.5% from beyond the arc. Walla Walla shot 39.2% from the floor and 42.9% from three-point range. The Pirates outrebounded the Wolves 39-33.
