Women's Tennis Gets Some Payback

SPOKANE, Wash. – Only three weeks after suffering a disappointing 5-4 loss at Puget Sound in women's tennis, Whitworth University gained some redemption with a 9-0 victory over the Loggers at home on Sunday afternoon.

The Pirates improved to 7-8 overall and 5-5 in the Northwest Conference, evening their league record for the first time in 2017.  The Loggers dropped to 7-8, 5-6.

Whitworth began the shutout by sweeping all three doubles contests.  First Madeline Ball and Paige Rohrbach defeated Tressa Bild and Tamara Runnicles 8-3 at #3 doubles.  Emma Jo Wiley and Jennifer Adams followed with an 8-5 victory over Bridget Myers and Barclay Fagg at #2.  Finally Bella Hoyos and Erica Lee pulled out an 8-6 win over Lisa Owen and Nicole Bouche at #1 doubles.

The team victory was quickly clinched when Wiley raced past Bouche 6-1, 6-1 at #2 singles and Adams crushed Myers 6-1, 6-3 at #3 singles.  Wiley had lost to straight sets to Bouche when the teams first met on March 19th.

Whitworth had little trouble completing the nine-match sweep from that point, except for #1 singles where Hoyos pulled out a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Owen.

The Pirates will finish the regular season on April 14th and 15th at Pacific (Ore.) and Linfield, respectively.
