TACOMA, Wash. – By pulling out both singles matches that went three sets, Puget Sound held on for a hard-fought 5-4 win over visiting Whitworth in a Northwest Conference women's tennis match on Sunday afternoon.
The Loggers improved to 7-5 overall and 5-4 in the NWC while the Pirates dropped to 3-6, 3-4.
Puget Sound took two of the three doubles matches to grab an early 2-1 lead. Two of those contests came down to the wire. Whitworth's #1 team of Bella Hoyos and Jennifer Adams pulled out a 9-8 win at #1 doubles. But the Logger #3 team of Barclay Fagg and Tressa Bild edged the Pirate tandem of Paige Rohrbach and Emily Sandquist 9-7.
The teams split the six singles matches. Hoyos beat Lisa Owen 6-3, 7-5 at #1 singles to improve her season record to 6-3. Also for Whitworth, Erica Lee defeated Bridget Myers 6-1, 6-1 at #4 singles while Rohrbach got by Bild 6-2, 6-1 at #6 singles.
Puget Sound held on for the team win when Elizabeth Chao and Fagg each pulled out the three-set wins. Chao edged Adams 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 at #3 singles, while Fagg slipped past Sandquist 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 at #5 singles.
Whitworth will be back in action on March 28th during a Spring Break trip to California when the Pirates take on Caltech.
