LEWISTON, Idaho – The Lewis-Clark State College Warriors handed the Whitworth Pirates their first loss of the season in a 74-50 win on Wednesday evening.
The Warriors move to 6-1 on the year, while the Pirates fell to 2-1.
Erika Kuehn, Grace Douglas, and Camy Aguinaldo led Whitworth with nine points each. Jossilyn Blackman led the Warriors with 11 points and 6 rebounds. Jansen Edminston contributed 10 points and four assists.
Whitworth hung tough with LCSC for the majority of the first half, finishing the first quarter in a 17-17 tie and pulling within three points with 5:19 left in the half. Kuehn and Alli Kieckbusch keyed the Pirates with seven points apiece to keep the game even.
The Warriors pulled away with 3:50 remaining. They went on a 15-point run, which continued into the third quarter, putting LCSC up 45-27 early in the third. The two teams played even for the remainder of the third quarter and the Warriors emerged with a 60-40 lead entering the game's final period.
Lewis-Clark State dominated the paint with 8 blocks and a 14 rebound advantage, including 17 offensive boards. The Warriors scored ten more points in the paint than Whitworth. They forced the Pirates into 20 turnovers and held the Bucs to 32% shooting from the field. Whitworth's 33% shooting from beyond the arc was also a season-low.
Madison Moffat and Chloe Quinnett led Whitworth on the glass with six rebounds apiece. Aquinaldo led the Pirates with four assists. Sydney Riggs contributed two points and a rebound in her return from injury.
Next up, the Pirates have Thanksgiving off before traveling to Walla Walla, Wash. to square off with Evergreen State College. Whitworth's matchup with the Geoducks is scheduled to tip-off at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 24 at Whitman College.
