SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth women's soccer team scored two goals in the second half to beat visiting Willamette 2-0 in a Northwest Conference contest.
The Bearcats outshot the Pirates on total shots 17-13, but Whitworth had the edge 8-7 in shots on goal. Leah Corra (5), McKenzie Hemp (3) and Arielle Van Peursem (2) took 10 shots for the Pirates with Van Peursem and Corra adding one goal apiece.
Whitworth (3-5 overall, 2-2 NWC) and Willamette (4-4 overall, 1-3 NWC) both remained scoreless throughout the first half. The first scoring play came in the 65th minute when Pirate Midfielder Jenna Morris got the ball in the middle of the field just outside the box. Morris then found a streaking Van Peursem on a through ball right in front of Bearcat goalkeeper Kristen Barclay to take a 1-0 lead. In the 89th minute, Leah Corra, who had been causing problems for the Willamette backline all game, intercepted a potential clearing pass from a Bearcat centerback and put the ball near post for her third goal of the season.
Sienna Tanner posted her first shutout of 2016, recording seven saves and giving up no goals. Emily Sewall started in the goal for Willamette and played a perfect first half with three saves and no goals against. She was replaced in the second half by Barclay who had five saves and gave up both Whitworth goals.
Looking Ahead: The Pirates will travel to Oregon next weekend to take on Northwest Conference opponents Lewis & Clark and George Fox. Both games will start at 12 p.m. PDT.
