ORLANDO, Fla. – Hope College defeated Whitworth University 7-1 in a rain-shortened women's tennis match on Friday at the Lake Cane Tennis Center.
The Pirates dropped to 3-9 following the final match of their Spring Break trip to Florida. The 27th-ranked Flying Dutch improved to 4-3.
Anabelle Burns was responsible for Whitworth's only point on Friday with her 6-3, 6-4 win over Natalie Rahrig at #4 singles. Emma Jo Wiley was ahead 5-1 in the tiebreaker set at #3 singles when the match was called due to thunder storms.
Hope was able to jump out to a quick lead by sweeping the doubles matches. Nancy Benda and Marie Holaway edged Bella Hoyos and Jennifer Adams 8-5 at #1 doubles. Whitworth's KC McConnell and Paige Rohrbach also lost by a single break, falling to Kate Mader and Amanda Susnak 8-6 at #3 doubles.
Whitworth will return to Northwest Conference play next weekend when the Pirates host George Fox (April 2) and Lewis & Clark (April 3) at the Scotford Tennis Center.
