SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth earned its first win of the season with a 9-0 shutout of visiting Willamette in a Northwest Conference women's tennis match on Sunday at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The Pirates improved to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the NWC this season while the Bearcats dropped to 0-3, 0-3.
Whitworth won all three doubles matches by identical 8-1 scores. It was Bella Hoyos and Jennifer Adams over Alexix Gjurasic and Mikaila Smith at #1, Emma Jo Wiley and Anabelle Burns over Hannah Andres and Rachel Kong at #2 and Paige Rohrbach and Ashley Winslow over Katie Adams and Allie DiPasquale at #3.
All six singles matches occurred simultaneously as the teams were able to use the indoor and outdoor courts. Wiley increased Whitworth's lead to 4-0 when she got by Andres 6-1, 6-0 at #3 singles. Rohrbach then clinched the team win with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kong at #5 singles.
Adams followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Gjurasic at #2 and Burns (#4) was right behind with her 6-2, 6-3 win over Adams.
Hoyos earned 6-2, 6-1 victory over Smith in #1 singles and Caitlyn Heredia finished out the Pirate sweep with a 6-4, 6-1 win over DiPasquale at #6.
Whitworth returns to action next Sunday when the Pirates host Whitman College.
