IRVINE, Calif. – The Whitworth women's tennis team closed out its spring break trip to Southern California with a hard-fought 5-4 loss to Concordia (Calif.).
The Pirates dropped to 1-2 on their trip and 6-5 overall. The Eagles, ranked 12th in the most recent NAIA poll, improved to 6-10.
The difference came in doubles where Concordia gained a 2-1 advantage. Bella Hoyos and Saryn Mooney gained the Pirates' lone doubles point with an 8-6 win over Caitlyn Uzzi and Layla Accorsi at #2. Taylor Peña and Jennifer Adams lost 8-2 at #1 doubles. KC McConnell and Caylee Lamm lost by the same score at #3.
Whitworth and Concordia split the six singles matches. The most dramatic came at #6 where Morgan McDivitt rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6) win over Kelsey Markle at #6 singles. Hoyos defeated Ulrike Hahn 6-3, 6-4 at #3 singles and Adams topped Accorsi 6-2, 6-3 at #4 singles.
Peña fought hard, but fell to Ivana Vlakic, the 7th-ranked player in the NAIA, by a score of 6-0, 6-2 at #1 singles.
Whitworth will return to Northwest Conference play with a match at Linfield on Friday, April 3rd.
