SALEM, Ore. – Bella Hoyos and Annabelle Burns helped lead visiting Whitworth to an 8-1 win at Willamette in a Northwest Conference women's tennis match on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates picked up their third straight win to improve to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the NWC. The Bearcats fell to 0-5, 0-2.
Hoyos and Burns teamed up to give Whitworth an 8-0 win at #2 doubles. Taylor Peña and Jennifer Adams won 8-5 at #1, while Morgan McDivitt and Saryn Mooney won 8-1 at #3, giving the Pirates a 3-0 lead after the doubles matches.
Hoyos defeated Mikaila Smith 6-4, 6-2 at #2 singles and Burns topped Ellen Rumley 7-5, 6-0 at #4 singles to help clinch the team win. Adams won 6-1, 6-2 at #3 and McDivitt earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at #5. Caylee Lamm played at #6 and won 6-0, 6-0.
Willamette got its only win at #1 singles where Denise Poltavski defeated Peña 6-0, 6-0.
Whitworth will get an early season rematch at Whitman on Sunday.
