Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. – Dominating on both sides of the floor, No. 21 Whitworth rolled to an 89-50 win over visiting Pacific (Ore.) in a Northwest Conference men's basketball game on Saturday night.
The Pirates improved to 20-3 overall and 13-1 in the NWC, clinching their tenth consecutive 20-win season on a night when they honored senior post players Taylor Farnsworth and Adam Wilks prior to the game. The Boxers, still in the hunt for the fourth and final berth to the conference tournament, fell to 11-12, 6-8.
Whitworth made 52% (33-63) from the field, including 41% (11-27) from three point range. The Pirates also held Pacific to only 25% (12-48) from the field, 22% from beyond the arc. Whitworth also finished with a 39-30 edge on the backboards.
"Tonight was our most complete game of the season," said head coach Matt Logie. "I was really proud of the way we executed and played together on both sides of the ball. Our seniors have meant a lot to this program and I was glad to see our entire team play the way they did on Senior Night in their honor."
Whitworth never trailed and the game was tied only twice, the final time when Skyler Burgess made two free throws to tie the game 6-6. At that point the Pirates began to pull away, opening their first double-digit lead when Christian Jurlina converted a three-point play to put the Bucs ahead 23-11. Whitworhth eventually led by as many as 20 points in the opening half (41-21) after a pair of free throws from George Valle, but Michael Garcia scored a driving layup just before the halftime buzzer to pull the Boxers within 41-23 at the break. That's as close as they would get the rest of the game.
Whitworth opened the second half on a 13-2 run. Farnsworth and Wilks combined to score eight of the first ten points in that run. The Pirates never let up and Forrest Baker's three-pointer from the corner extended Whitworth's lead to 76-34 with just under six minutes to play. That 42-point margin was the Pirates' largest of the game.
Valle and Jurlina each scored 14 points to lead Whitworth in scoring. Jurlina also led the team with nine rebounds. Wilks finished with 12 points and Kenny Love totaled 11 points and five assists.
No Pacific player reached double figures in scoring. Danny Brakebush had nine points off of the bench to lead his team.
Whitworth will travel to Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound next weekend with a chance to clinch a sixth consecutive NWC regular season title. The Pirates hold a one-game lead over Whitman in the league standings.
