DII CWU Rolls by Whitworth

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Jasmin Edwards scored 22 points, dished five assists and grabbed four steals to lead Central Washington to a 71-47 win over visiting Whitworth on Wednesday night in a non-conference women's basketball game.

The NCAA Division II Wildcats improved to 4-1 while the Pirates fell to 1-2.

CWU jumped out to a 13-4 lead after the first quarter and increased the advantage to 15-4 early in the second period.  But Whitworth hit three three-pointers to pull within 17-15 midway through the second quarter.  The Pirates were still within 25-21 after a pair of free throws by Grace Douglass with 2:12 to play in the half.  The Wildcats then closed the half on a 6-0 run to lead 31-21 at the break.

CWU outscored Whitworth 24-12 in the third quarter to put the game away.  A 10-4 run over the first five minutes of the third was the finish of a 16-4 run that spanned halftime and increased the lead to 41-25.  By the time Edwards hit back-to-back baskets late in the period the Wildcats had stretched the lead to 53-29.

The CWU lead was never less than 20 points in the fourth quarter.

Douglas scored 10 points off of the bench to lead Whitworth in scoring.  She was the only Pirate player in double figures.  Faith Emerson had nine points.  The Pirates were limited to 37% (16-43) shooting from the floor by the taller Wildcats and committed 23 turnovers.

Jasmine Parker added 10 points for CWU.  The Wildcats made 54% (30-56) of their shots from the floor and finished with a 31-23 edge in rebounding.

Whitworth will return to action on December 4th when the Pirates open Northwest Conference play against Lewis & Clark College.
