Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. - A second-half goal from Lewis & Clark's Annelise Coxeff proved to be the difference as the Pioneers edged Whitworth, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
Whitworth, hosting its first NWC match of the season, dropped to 1-4-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the NWC while the Pioneers improved to 4-1-1, 2-0-0 in winning their third game in a row. The Pirates, who are yet to allow more than two goals in a game, suffered their fourth one-goal loss of the young season.
Coxeff's goal came in the 59th minute and was assisted by Emily Thompson. Thompson sent a cross from the right side of the field into the box, finding Coxeff who got free from the Whitworth defense and finished past Andrea Stump from close range for the goal.
Stump made three saves for the Pirates while Lewis & Clark keeper Geena Fong stopped six shots in recording the shutout.
The Pirates held a 16-11 shot advantage, including an 8-3 edge in the first half, but were unable to find the back of the net. Whitworth also had a 6-4 edge in shots on goal and a 6-5 advantage on corner kicks.
"We were playing against a very good team, and overall I thought we had the majority of the play today," head coach Jael Hagerott said. "I think the team should go away pleased with that, but at the same time hungry for more because nobody likes to lose."
Whitworth continues conference play Sunday, hosting the Willamette Bearcats while the Pioneers travel to take on Whitman.
