SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth defeated visiting Lewis & Clark 7-2 to set up a showdown for first place in the Northwest Conference women's tennis standings with Whitman next week.

The Pirates improved to 11-3 overall and 9-0 in the NWC, tied atop the league standings with Whitman.  The Whits will meet on Saturday (April 12) in Walla Walla.

The Bucs took two of three doubles matches.  Anabelle Burns and Hannah Wallin topped Theresa Grigsby and Allison Schneider 8-3 at #3 doubles, while Taylor Peña and Saryn Mooney defeated Claudia Lew and Olivia Sweetman 8-4 at #1 doubles.

The Pioneers (1-11, 1-9) got their doubles point when Makena McCluskey and Gillian Lowe edged Bella Hoyos and Morgan McDivitt 8-6 at #2.

Caylee Lamm got Whitworth's first singles point when she beat Paloma Vizcaino 6-0, 6-0 at #6 singles.  Mooney followed quickly with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Sweetman at #2 singles.  McDivitt clinched the team win for Whitworth with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Grigsby at #5 singles.

Hoyos beat McCluskey 6-2, 6-0 at #3 and Burns rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-2) win over Lowe at #4.

L&C's only win came at #1 where Lew got by Peña 6-2, 6-3.

The Whitworth-Whitman match next Saturday begins at 2:00 pm and is the Bucs' only contest of the weekend.
