SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth women's tennis team earned its sixth straight Northwest Conference win and handed visiting Puget Sound only its second conference loss of the season with an 8-1 decision on Friday night at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The Pirates improved to 6-1 overall and 6-0 in the NWC, while the Loggers dropped to 5-2, 4-2.
Whitworth swept the three doubles matches in just under an hour. Morgan McDivitt and Bella Hoyos got the first Pirate point with an 8-2 win over Malia Ford and Elizabeth Chao 8-2 at #2 doubles. Anabelle Burns and Hannah Wallin followed with an 8-3 win over Sarah Nielsen and Allison Embernate 8-3 at #3. Sarayn Mooney and Taylor Peña closed out the doubles sweep with an 8-4 victory at #1 over Logan Thompson and Marissa Friedman.
The team victory was quickly clinched in Whitworth's favor with straight-set wins in the top three singles matches. Burns beat Ford 6-2, 6-0 at #3, followed quickly by Peña's 6-0, 6-2 win over Chao at #2 that created an insurmountable 5-0 Pirate lead. Mooney made it 6-0 with her 6-2, 6-4 defeat of Thompson at #1.
McDivitt beat Nielsen 6-1, 6-3 at #4 singles. And KC McConnell made her tennis debut with a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) win over Holly Dixon at #6.
Embernate gave UPS its only point with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lamm at #5 singles.
Whitworth will take on Pacific Lutheran on Saturday while the Loggers travel to play at Whitman.
