SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth rolled to an 8-1 win over visiting Willamette in the Northwest Conference women's tennis opener for both schools on Friday at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The Pirates improved to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the NWC, while the Bearcats dropped to 1-1, 0-1.
Whitworth led 2-1 after doubles. The Pirate pair of Bella Hoyos and Morgan McDivitt beat Nebraska Lucas and Alicia Sohn 8-1 at #2, then Whitworth's Hannah Wallin and Anabelle Burns defeated Taylor Coggeshall and Emily Guimont 8-1 at #3 doubles.
Sabrina Gutierrez and Denise Poltavski pulled Willamette within 2-1 with an 8-4 win over Saryn Mooney and Taylor Peña at #1 doubles.
The score quickly went to 3-1 when Sohn retired down 5-0 in the first set to Hoyos at #3 singles. Morgan McDivitt took over on that court and gave the Pirates an easy 6-0, 6-0 win over Guimont at #4 singles. Soon after Mooney finished off Gutierrez 6-2, 6-3 at #1 and Peña topped Poltavski 6-2, 6-2 at #2 to clinch the team victory.
Burns defeated Lucas 6-0, 6-1 at #5 singles, while Caylee Lamm rolled Coggeshall 6-2, 6-0 at #6 to close out the contest.
Whitworth will take on Linfield College on Saturday, while Willamette travels to Whitman.
