GEORGETOWN, Texas – Visiting Whitworth shook off any post-final exam cobwebs with a 26-3 first half run on the way to a 77-57 win at Southwestern University on Tuesday night.

The Pirates, who have not played an official game in 18 days and completed exams on Friday, improved to 4-2 with their third straight win.  Southwestern, also the Pirates, fell to 1-4.

The game was tied 8-8 with 12 minutes left in the first half when Whitworth went on its big run.  Christian Jurlina nailed three three-pointers, while Adam Wilks and Kionte Brown converted three-point plays.  Jurlina's final trey capped the spurt, giving the Bucs a 34-11 lead with five minutes to go in the opening period.

Southwestern got back within 43-27 after Ben Stiver converted a four-point play with just under four seconds left, but Derek Isaak nailed a 30-footer at the buzzer to give Whitworth a 46-27 lead at the break.

A three-pointer by Travis Kurtz got Southwestern within 51-36 almost four minutes into the second half.  But that is as close as the Pirates from Texas would get.  Forrest Baker's basket with just under five minutes to play gave Whitworth its largest lead of the game at 74-47.

Jurlina finished with 17 points, while Wilks came off of the bench for 11 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.  Whitworth outrebounded Southwestern 51-34 in the game. 

Stiver was the only Southwestern player in double figures with 12 points off of the bench.  The Pirate defense held the hosts to only 29.8% (17-57) from the field in the game.  Southwestern also struggled at the free throw line, making only 50% (16-32).

Whitworth concludes its trip to Texas with a game at Trinity University on Thursday night.
