Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. - Pacific Lutheran broke through with three goals after halftime following a scoreless first half, handing Whitworth a 3-0 loss on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
Whitworth dropped to 2-7-1 overall and 1-5-0 in the Northwest Conference while Pacific Lutheran improved to 6-2-1, 4-1-0 in winning its fourth-straight match.
The Pirates are yet to allow a first-half goal in 2014, and extended the streak against the Lutes. But Pacific Lutheran found success in the second half, breaking the scoreless tie.
Lauren Larson scored her sixth goal of the season in the 65th minute to open the scoring. She finished from close range on a short cross from Jamie Hoffman, who had recovered a cross from going over the end line and sent the ball back toward the goal. Kaylie Rozell doubled the lead in the 78th minute, taking a pass from Emily Hannah and scoring with a one-time touch finish for her third goal of the season.
Kelly White furthered the lead for Pacific Lutheran on a penalty kick in the 85th minute. The goal marked the first match this season during which the Pirates have allowed more than two goals.
The Lutes had an 11-4 shot advantage, including an 8-1 edge in shots on goal. The Pirates were unable to generate a corner kick against Pacific Lutheran. Andrea Stump made five saves for Whitworth.
Head coach Jael Hagerott commented on the full-game consistency needed for the Pirates, who have played strong defense in the first half all season.
"As a group, we played beautiful soccer in the first half, it was fun to watch," Hagerott said. "And that's something where we say, 'OK, now we need consistency and we need that for the entire game.'"
Whitworth returns to action Sunday at noon against the University of Puget Sound.
