Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. - Courtney Potter scored from the top of the 18-yard box with just over five minutes to play as Whitworth snapped a two-match losing streak and topped Pacific, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
The Pirates (5-10-1, 4-8-0 NWC) earned their fifth shutout win of the season while the Boxers (5-9-2, 2-8-1) suffered their fourth straight one-goal loss.
Potter scored her first goal of the season from just outside the 18-yard box in the 85th minute, putting her shot over a leaping goalkeeper. McKenzie Hemp assisted the goal, as Potter found a pocket of open space to put the long-range shot on goal.
"Court (Potter) was a spark plug for us up top today," head coach Jael Hagerott said. "McKenzie played a great ball and Court was able to get around her defender just enough for a quality goal outside the 18."
Pacific held an 11-8 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Whitworth took six corner kicks compared with three for Pacific.
Four of the shots by Pacific came within a span of two minutes just after halftime, including a shot from Krisa Duff that deflected off the crossbar.
Andrea Stump collected four saves in the shutout effort. Each Whitworth victory in 2014 has been a shutout victory.
"The defensive effort today was good," Hagerott said. "We had to make adjustments due to some injuries from last weekend. The team responded well and kept a clean sheet today."
The Pirates, battling several injuries, made adjustments against the Boxers that included moving leading goal-scorer Tiara Pajimola from forward to play on the back line defensively.
Whitworth continues conference action Sunday against Linfield at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
