SPOKANE, Wash. - Hannah Bokma scored in the 89th minute as Whitworth edged Whitman, 1-0, to earn a split of the season series on Wednesday at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
Whitworth improved to 3-6-0 in the Northwest Conference and 4-8-1 overall while Whitman (6-5-2, 4-3-2) dropped its third-straight conference match following a 4-0-2 start to the NWC schedule. The Missionaries edged the Pirates, 2-1, earlier this season in the conference opener for both teams.
Bokma finished to the upper right corner of the net in the closing minutes of the match following a corner kick sent into the box by Sarah Mickelsen. Several players from both teams got a touch on the ball in the box before Bokma gained possession and scored from close range.
"Whitman is an excellent team," head coach Jael Hagerott said. "We changed some things in how we pressed the ball, and we were composed at the end. I give Hannah great credit that she was composed in the box and was able to put it away."
Andrea Stump secured four saves in earning her fifth shutout of the season. Stump made three saves in the second half and did well to stop several lead passes skidding into the box on the slick surface. Both teams dealt with tough conditions on a cold and rainy day.
"You start with your goalkeeper -- Dre (Stump)" Hagerott said in discussing the defensive performance. "Her hands were solid, she read the play well. She stuffed several great Whitman opportunities."
Hagerott also commended the Whitworth defensive back line for playing tough defense and keeping the clean sheet against the Missionaries. Each victory for the Pirates in 2014 has been a shutout.
Whitworth is yet to allow a first-half goal this season, and extended the streak Wednesday. All but one of the losses for Whitworth this season have come by a single goal. Whitman came close to breaking the streak on a shot by Linnea Soo that hit the cross bar in the 38th minute, perhaps the closest scoring opportunity on the day for the Missionaries.
The Pirates held a 5-3 edge on corner kick attempts, but Whitman outshot Whitworth 9-5.
Whitworth will travel to western Washington this weekend to face Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran, the top two teams in the conference standings.
